Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds brought their annual destination event in Mexico to a close on Sunday night. The pair welcomed Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio to lend a hand on the final three songs of their main set at Moon Palace in Riviera Cancún, Mexico.
The Dave Matthews Band frontman and guitarist played their third of three Dave Matthews & Tim Reynolds Riviera Maya 2024 performances on Sunday. Anastasio, who previously joined the duo at their Mexican events in 2020 and 2022, and his bandmates begin Phish: Riviera Maya 2024 at the Moon Palace on Wednesday night.

Trey Anastasio initially emerged on piano to accompany Dave and Tim on “So Damn Lucky.” Both “So Damn Lucky” and the “Dodo” that followed were recorded by Matthews for his 2003 debut solo album, Some Devil, which featured contributions from Anastasio. The “So Damn Lucky” was a role reversal from two years prior, when Dave Matthews joined Phish for the song during the opening night of Phish: Riviera Maya 2022.
Anastasio moved over to electric guitar on “Dodo.” He remained on his trusty Languedoc for the cover of “Up On Cripple Creek” that ended the 22-song main set on Sunday evening. Matthews hadn’t performed The Band classic in public since a Dave Matthews & Friends show on February 5, 2006. Trey and Dave traded lead vocal duties during “Up On Cripple Creek.”

The guest appearance followed a set that started with a series of three Dave Matthews solo songs. Matthews kicked off the frame with his first “Pretty Bird” since September 19, 2018 and followed with “Shotgun” and a cover of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe.” Other rarities played on Sunday once Reynolds emerged were “Seek Up” (last played by Dave & Tim on April 7, 2017), “Why I Am” (last played by Dave & Tim on February 16, 2020) and “Too Much” (last played by Dave & Tim on February 20, 2022).
Dave Matthews opened Sunday’s encore solo with his first “Funny How Time Slips Away” at a Dave & Tim show dating back to June 18, 2019. Reynolds then came out for “Corn Bread” and an “All Along The Watchtower” that slipped into a partial “Stairway To Heaven” and back again. Matthews returned to wrap the event by performing a solo “Some Devil” as the second encore.
