Dave Matthews sat down with SiriusXM’s Ari Fink to talk Dave Matthews Band’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction, with the ceremony going down on Saturday, October 19 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland. The interview on SiriusXM’s Dave Matthews Band Radio included who Dave would select as his dream, non-living Rock Hall inductor as well as a thank you to fans.
“The person that jumped into my mind was my dad,” Matthews told Fink. “But you probably want someone with like cool braids or wears a shirt open down low. You want someone that’s edgy.”
Dave then chose The Maestro:
“Frank Zappa. But Frank Zappa wouldn’t do it on principle. He’d be my favorite of all. You know, I grew up loving Frank Zappa and his fear of the decline of America.
“Of the decline, and certainly of the decline or the already declined qualities of America,” Matthews added. “But then also he was so much more eloquent than I can … I think he was just awesome and it’d be fun to hear what terrible shit he would say. I mean, it would just be, the whole thing would be class. I mean … if he inducted you into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, probably people would remember more what he said with outrage than who he was inducting.”

Dave also tipped his cap to DMB fans.
“For me the best thing about this was that the first time we were nominated, the fans came out and we won the fan vote. And now this time we also won the fan vote.”
Additionally, Matthews acknowledged the respect from peers and musical heroes as a perk of the RRHOF induction. But he returned to praise DMB’s fans.
“[The] people … many of whom are my heroes. I have to say, that they would probably agree with me in saying that it’s having fans that will support you and having people that will listen to your music — that’s what it’s all about. The gratitude to the fans.”
