Dave Matthews Plays Rare Solo Set At Bernie Sanders Rally
By Scott Bernstein Jun 7, 2016 • 7:00 am PDT

Guitarist Dave Matthews was among the performers at a rally for presidential candidate Bernie Sanders held yesterday in San Francisco. Matthews played a four-song solo set that included one of his newest songs, a pair of classics and a tune from Dave Matthews Band’s last studio album. Fantastic Negrito, Fishbone and Yarn also performed at the event which came ahead of today’s California primaries.
Matthews kicked off his set with “Samurai Cop,” one of the new songs DMB debuted last month in Charlottesville that has been a staple of the group’s recent performances. Dave told the crowd his mom likes Bernie and while he was disappointed Virginia didn’t “go quite as far for Bernie as we hoped,” he noted Charlottesville and Seattle “went for Bernie.” He then served up early DMB classics “Ants Marching” and “Don’t Drink The Water.” The guitarist ended his brief performance with “Mercy” off 2012’s Away From The World.
