Dave Matthews Band’s swing through frontman Dave Matthews’ home country of South Africa opened in Pretoria at the SunBet Arena on Sunday. DMB welcomed South African singer Vusi Mahlasela for “Everyday,” a song he contributed to in the studio as well as in live settings.

“Everyday” is the title track to DMB’s 2001 album. Following his contribution to the studio cut, Vusi Mahlasela joined the band to perform the song live for the first time on June 17, 2006 at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) in Saratoga Springs, New York, as per DMBAlmanac. In Pretoria, Mahlasela reprised his role on the song for the first time since DMB’s trip to South Africa in 2013.

“My voice is getting a little bit tired with all the excitement,” Dave began his introduction of Vusi. “I thank you very very much for coming this evening. I wanted to thank somebody else, an old friend of mine [who] had us over to his house the other day. And he threw the party of parties. There was live music, there was dancing. I made a fool of myself, but so did everybody and we had a really good time so I’d like to ask my old friend, my good friend, Vusi Mahlasela to come up here and sing a song.”

The “Everyday” performance came as the penultimate song of the set and contained elements of Mahlasela’s “When You Come Back,” the title track to his 1992 debut album. Watch Vusi Mahlasela join DMB for “Everyday” in South Africa below:

DMB kicked off the concert with a pair of “rain” songs — Led Zeppelin’s “Fool in the Rain” and original “Virginia in the Rain.” Following Everyday’s “When the World Ends,” the group offered “Madman’s Eyes” off their latest album, 2023’s Walk Around the Moon. DMB also performed the LP’s title track alongside classics like “Warehouse,” “Lie in Our Graves,” “So Much To Say,” “Too Much” and “Jimi Thing.”

Following the “Everyday” performance with Mahlasela, DMB went it alone for set-closer “Ants Marching.” Dave then went solo to begin the encore with the traditional “Rye Whiskey” before the band rejoined for “Pantala Naga Pampa” and “Rapunzel” to seal the show. The brief trek concludes in Cape Town tomorrow.
