Dave Matthews Band wrapped up their 2022 tour itinerary with a two-night stand at Madison Square Garden in New York City over the weekend. Friday, DMB brought out musicians from The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’s house band while Saturday saw sit-ins from Saturday Night Live band members and more.

DMB launched their set on Friday with “When The World Ends.” Several songs that debuted in the 21st century came next up until the oldie “What Would You Say,” which fell in the ninth song slot. Following the new tune “The Ocean And The Butterfly,” the band embarked on a +16-minute “Crush” which opened with the usual bass into from Stefan Lessard and also contained elements of “New York, New York.”

After “Squirm,” “Louisiana Bayou,” “Lying In The Hands Of God” and “Why I Am,” DMB brought out The Late Show band leader Louis Cato for “Lie In Our Graves.” Cato would bring a guitar run to a rolling boil in an outstanding solo during the middle section which fittingly closed the favorite as DMB opted to go sans reprise.

Cato’s Colbert bandmates trumpeter Jon Lampley and saxophonist Louis Fouché then joined in for “Stay (Wasting Time).” Cato would depart for “Ants Marching,” which saw DMB trumpeter Rashawn Ross kicking off the horn solo section before Lampley came in on sousaphone ahead of Fouché and DMB saxohponist Dave Coffin for a raucous horn sequence on the classic set closer. Dave Matthews delivered the first “Some Devil” of fall tour in the usual solo format to begin the encore before the band joined him to conclude the evening with “Grey Street.”

Saturday got underway “Pantala Naga Pampa” and “Rapunzel.” DMB would flip the script a bit from the first night adding a number of ‘90s tunes in the beginning of the set including “#41,” “Pig,” and an eventful “So Much To Say” > “Anyone Seen The Bridge” > “Too Much” sequence that saw Dave having some trouble with the words to “SMTS” and elements of “Also Sprach Zarathustra” and “Heartbreaker” during the “Anyone Seen The Bridge” transition jam.

A mix of older and newer songs followed along with a cover of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer.” Renowned jazz guitarist Mark Whitfield guested with the band on “Corn Bread” before Saturday Night Live musical director and saxophonist Lenny Pickett added to “Steady As We Go.” SNL horn players baritone saxophonist Ron Blake, alto saxophonist Alex Foster and trumpeter Summer Camargo then joined Pickett as well as DMB trumpeter Ross and Dave Coffin for a big brass sound on “Shake Me Like A Monkey” and a crowd-participating “Jimi Thing.”

Following Led Zeppelin’s “Fool In The Rain,” DMB delivered a number of classics to close the concert with the set wrapping on “Warehouse” and “Two Step.” The vintage tunes continued for the encore beginning with “Pay For What You Get” before DMB capped their 2022 with “Don’t Drink The Water.”
