Dave Matthews Band Offers Neil Young Covers & Bust Out At The Gorge

Last night Dave Matthews Band wrapped up a three-night stand at The Gorge in Quincy, Washington that included their 50th performance at the scenic venue. DMB’s visit to The Gorge featured a pair of acoustic Neil Young tunes as well as the return of a long-lost cover.

Friday’s opener began with “Whiter Shade Of Pale” and “Rye Whiskey” played solo by Matthews. The rest of the show stuck to a similar script of many of this summer’s DMB shows. On Saturday the group worked a cover of Neil Young’s “Down By The River” into their acoustic set for the first time ever. The acoustic opening set also featured the band’s first unplugged “Lover Lay Down.” Saturday’s electric set included the return of “Proudest Monkey” after a 23-show absence and “Rhyme & Reason” after a 25- song hiatus. “Rhyme & Reason” saw DMB aided by guitarist Joe Lawlor while the Lovely Ladies backing vocalists added to “Drunken Soldier,” “Everyday,” “Lying In The Hands Of God,” “Be Yourself” and a cover of Talking Heads’ “Burning Down The House.”

Sunday’s acoustic set contained the biggest bust out of the run – the return of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.” The cover was one of the first DMB played after forming, but suddenly disappeared in 2001 leading to a massive gap between August 26, 2001 and Sunday’s performance. Dave played “Angel From Montgomery” solo as he did the cover of Neil Young’s “The Needle & The Damage Done” that followed. “Captain” ended the run’s final acoustic set marking the first time the song has ever ended a DMB set. The Lovely Ladies returned to help out on “Granny,” “Rooftop,” “You & Me,” “Hunger For The Great Light” and “The Best Of What’s Around” during the electric set.

Dave Matthews Band summer tour continues on Wednesday in Lake Tahoe.
