Dave Matthews Band Debuts Led Zeppelin Cover At Alpine Valley
Watch the septet's take on "Fool In The Rain" in East Troy, Wisconsin.
Dave Matthews Band premiered a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Fool In The Rain” on Saturday during their first of two concerts at Alpine Valley Music Theatre. The septet also delivered the first full-band “Steady As We Go” in nearly four years last night at the venue in East Troy, Wisconsin.
Alpine Valley has a long history of Dave Matthews Band shows dating back to the group’s debut at the shed on May 30, 1998. Last night’s concert marked Dave Matthews & Co.’s 34th at Alpine, which also hosted a set from Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds as part of Farm Aid 2019. Nikki Lane opened for DMB on Saturday.
Dave Matthews Band kicked off last night’s concert with just their second “Pig” of 2022. Next up was Busted Stuff gem “Grace Is Gone,” tour staple “Madman’s Eyes” and “Come On Come On,” a track from 2018’s Come Tomorrow that has been played nine times since its tour debut in Charleston, South Carolina on June 4.
Saturday’s main set moved on with “When The World Ends,” the evening’s lone cut off 2001’s Everyday, “You Might Die Trying” from Stand Up 2005 and “Stay Or Leave,” which along with “So Damn Lucky” later in the night represented the Dave Matthews solo album Some Devil in the setlist at Alpine Valley. The seven-piece then paired one of their most recently debuted original, “THe Other Thing,” with the beloved “#41.”
The biggest surprise of the night came next as Dave Matthews Band unveiled their take on “Fool In The Rain.” Originally recorded by Led Zeppelin for 1979′ In Through The Out Door, the song was played four times by Dave Matthews & Friends between December 17, 2003 and January 15, 2004. Additionally, bassist Stefan Lessard covered “Fool In The Rain” with his Yukon Kornelius project at Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater in Vail, Colorado on December 10, 2011. Keyboardist Buddy Strong shined on piano for DMB’s first “Fool In The Rain” with Tim Reynolds channeling Jimmy Page during his guitar solo.
Another surprise came a few songs later when Stand Up chestnut “Steady As We Go” was given the full-band treatment for the first time since July 14, 2018. The previous two versions this tour featured just Dave Matthews and Buddy Strong. From there, DMB capped the set with the “Pantala Naga Pampa”/”Rapunzel” sequence, Come Tomorrow’s “Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)” and a double dose of fan favorites in a “Dancing Nancies” that bled into “Warehouse.”
The encore started with Dave offering a solo take on “Rye Whiskey.” The rest of the band then returned to the stage for a show-closing “Two Step.” Watch fan-shot video footage of last night’s “Fool In The Rain” below:
