Dave Matthews Band Breaks Out An Oldie At Jones Beach

Dave Matthews Band played their lucky 21st show at Jones Beach last night in front of a capacity crowd. The encore began with the first “full-band” version of the classic “I’ll Back You Up” since 2021.

The septet thrilled fans at the sold-out show with a setlist heavy on fan-favorite songs. DMB looked to their mid-1990s output for a run of “#41,” “Don’t Drink The Water,” “Pantala Naga Pampa” and “Pig” to start the concert.” The latter is the latest tune to emerge out of “Pantala Naga Pampa” after the song was freed up earlier this year from its role introducing “Rapunzel.”

Dave Matthews and company then served up “Walk Around The Moon,” the evening’s lone offering and title track from the latest DMB album. Speaking of title tracks, the ensuing “Busted Stuff” made its first appearance at Jones Beach. “Minarets,” “What Would You Say,” “Dancing Nancies,” “Warehouse” and “Ants Marching” were among other longtime staples played by the band at the Long Island venue last night. Matthews fit a lyrical reference to being “lost somewhere in Wantagh, Long Island” into the beginning of “Dancing Nancies.”

Matthews was joined by fellow co-founding member members bassist Stefan Lessard and drummer Carter Beauford as well as lead guitarist Tim Reynolds as they took the stage to begin the encore. The four musicians dusted off “I’ll Back You Up” in a spot usually featuring a solo Dave performance. “I’ll Back You Up” is one of the oldest songs in Matthews’ repertoire. The song hadn’t been played at a DMB show dating back to November 9, 2021. The rest of the band then returned to wrap the show with “Crush.”
