Dave Matthews Band Kicks Off 2024 US Summer Tour In Tampa

Dave Matthews Band launched their 2024 U.S. Summer Tour on Wednesday at the MIDFLORIDA Credit Union Amphitheatre in Tampa. Dave Matthews and company delivered a healthy mix of older favorites and newer tunes along with a recently debuted David Bowie cover.

The concert got underway with the classic “Warehouse” followed by “Old Dirt Hill (Bring That Beat Back)” from DMB’s 2005 album Stand Up. Next came the title track to the band’s latest studio effort, 2023’s Walk Around the Moon.

Keyboardist Buddy Strong and saxophonist Jeff Coffin then began a fake out of “Madman’s Eyes” (Walk Around the Moon) before the full band — Dave, drummer Carter Beauford, bassist Stefan Lessard, trumpeter Rashawn Ross and guitarist Tim Reynolds — joined in before jumping into to “Minarets.”

Dave then stepped to the mic to share some thoughts on the state of the world:

Sometimes when I look at the world, I think there’s all these problems…seems like we can’t fix anything. I think we have all the solutions. But there’s one great obstacle. And I think that the biggest obstacle in our way is greed. I just can’t make sense of having too much and wanting more. But I’ve been lucky so maybe I should shut up. I don’t know. It just seems like even the most terrible of suffering is okay if it makes you enough money. I hope that we can all be grateful that we can come to a place like this and all have a good time.

Well said. The band then delivered “Looking For A Vein” from Walk Around the Moon. Following “Dancing Nancies,” Dave and the group offered a cover of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance,” recently debuted by DMB on March 1 in Las Vegas.

Dave Matthews Band then stretched out on a nearly 14-minute rendition of “Typical Situation.” The main set came to a close with “Grey Street.” Dave returned solo to perform “Here On Out” off 2018’s Come Tomorrow before the band joining him for “So Right” to cap the concert.
