Greensky Bluegrass kicked off a run of shows with Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country at KEMBA Live in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday. The guitarist joined the quintet for a GSBG original and a Bruce Hornsby cover during the second set.
Set two got underway with a track off Greensky’s latest album Stress Dreams, “Reasons to Stay.” Next, GSBG guitarist Dave Bruzza led the way on “Wings for Wheels” ahead of the band’s cover of Jimmy Martin’s “Hit Parade of Love.” A cowboy-hatted Donato emerged and immediately jumped into some pretty riffage on the intro to “Room Without A Roof.” The guitarist also added a high and lonesome run to the chill tune.

Bassist Mike Devol then thumped out Greensky’s grassy version of Bruce Hornsby’s “King of the Hill” off the pianist’s 1998 album Spirit Trail. Mandolinist Paul Hoffman captained the cover with his vocals soaked in echo alongside banjo player Michael Bont joining him in harmony before adding a rolling solo on the five string.
It was Anders Beck’s turn next on dobro before an angsty jam ensued with Donato tearing into his Telecaster. Watch GSBG and Daniel Donato perform “Room Without A Roof” and “King of the Hill” below:

Greensky Bluegrass kicked off the concert with “Reverend” followed by a rare cover of bluegrass great Don Reno’s “Long Gone.” Greensky had not played the song since October 29, 2014 for a gap of 836 shows, as per Phantasy Tour.
The “Long Gone” in Columbus marked just the third GSBG play. The first set also included an exploratory cover of Joshua Davis’ “Last Winter in the Copper Country” and closed with a 12-minute “Kerosene.”
Following the Donato sit-in, Greensky delivered early tune “Through The Trees” before an apt “Casual Wednesday” appeared in a “Broke Mountain Breakdown” sequence to wrap the second set. The quintet returned to conclude the concert with Dire Straits favorite “Money For Nothing.”
