Daniel Donato Welcomes Cris Jacobs & Kanika Moore At Maybe It Was The Roses

Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country delivered a set at the Grateful Dead-themed Maybe It Was The Roses festival in Ventura, California. DDCC welcomed Roses performers Kanika Moore and Cris Jacobs on Saturday.

Guitarist Daniel Donato and company began the set with a cover of “Why You Been Gone So Long,” a song he included on the album Cosmic Country & Western Songs. Kanika Moore clocked the first guest spot, rolling out to sing “Second That Emotion,” a Smokey Robinson and the Miracles 1967 Motown hit the Grateful Dead covered often early on.

Kanika and Donato also teamed to sing another GD staple cover of Bobby Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light.” Cris Jacobs then came aboard to add guitar and vocals to yet another Dead-covered song, Johnny Cash's “Big River.”

Next, Jacobs led Cosmic Country through their first time play of the Jimmy Cliff classic, “The Harder They Come,” a favorite of the Jerry Garcia Band, with Kanika Moore on backing vocals. The guest section came to a close with Bill Browning’s “Dark Hollow” and Bob Dylan's “Quinn The Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn).”
