Covers Galore For Widespread Panic In Cedar Rapids

On Tuesday night, Georgia rockers Widespread Panic returned to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the first time since July 2, 2002 -an important night in the band’s history as it marked guitarist Michael Houser’s final gig. Panic honored Mikey by opening with a cover of Taj Mahal’s “She Caught The Katy,” the last song Houser played with the band on that historic night. “She Caught The Katy” was one of many covers Widespread Panic had in store for their return to Cedar Rapids.

After following the “Katy” cover with a first set filled with career-spanning originals, Widespread Panic began a seamless closing stanza with a “Second Skin” sandwich containing a filling of The Band covers -“Ophelia” and “The Shape I’m In.” There was another song sandwich on tap later in the set as the band surrounded “Time Is Free” with “Driving Song” and brought the set to a close with “Chilly Water.” For the encore, the Georgians delivered a one-two cover punch of Bill Withers’ “Use Me” and Motorhead’s “Ace Of Spades.” Widespread Panic hadn’t performed the heavy metal classic since way back on November 16, 2013 in New York City. The band now heads to Ames, Iowa for a show tonight.
