Cover Alert | Soulive, GPJ & Anders Mash Pink Floyd & Neil Young
By Scott Bernstein Mar 20, 2015 • 11:50 am PDT

Soulive started off the evening by themselves for the original “Dig” and a cover of The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” The Shady Horns then emerged to add to renditions of “Fire Eater,” “The Swamp” and “Upshot.” Porter Jr. joined the fray for The Meters’ “Pungee,” “Keep On Marching” and “He Bite Me (The Dragon)” to end the first set.
The jazz-rock trio came out for the second set augmented by The Shady Horns and Osborne for Anders’ “On The Road To Charlie Parker” and “Pleasin’ You.” Osborne then led Soulive through “Back Together,” a song featured on the debut North Mississippi Osborne album. From there, Soulive, The Shady Horns, George Porter Jr. and Anders Osborne collaborated on a cover of JJ Cale’s “After Midnight.” Next up was the aforementioned Neil Young/Pink Floyd medley which featured GPJ on vocals for “Breathe” and “Down By The River.” The second set came to a close with a cover of “Bertha” (Grateful Dead) featuring Osborne and Porter Jr. and a take on The Meters’ “Africa” with all of the evening’s previous guests as well as drummer Questlove of The Roots and Tedeschi Trucks Band trumpeter Maurice Brown. George also led the encore of “Ain’t No Use” aided by Osborne and The Shady Horns.
Bowlive continues tonight at Brooklyn Bowl. A webcast is available via Nugs.TV.
