Cover Alert | Keller, Al, Phil & Friends Down By The River

Last night, Phil Lesh’s ten-show, five-weekend residency at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York continued with the Grateful Dead bassist leading a guitar-heavy ensemble that included Keller Williams, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz of A.L.O., Jason Crosby, John Kadlecik and Joe Russo as well as guests Al Schnier of moe. and Ross James through a bevy of GD repertoire classics and a few choice covers.

Schnier was out onstage for the vast majority of the show with the exception of the first three songs of the second set. James, who’s a regular at Terrapin Crossroads, played and sang on “Samson & Delilah” and a cover of Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane.” The first set came to a close with an impressive “Down By The River” > “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider” sequence that showed off the inventive sound of the ensemble Lesh put together.
