Collaborations Galore At Widespread Panic Umphrey’s McGee Finale

This weekend saw a meeting of the jam minds when Umphrey’s McGee opened for Widespread Panic on Friday and Saturday nights at the Family Circle Stadium in Charleston, SC. After Friday night’s show saw impressive sets from both bands, but no collaborations, Saturday saw guest spots in both bands’s performances.

The collaboration action started during Umphrey’s set, when the Chicago-based band brought out John Bell to lead them through a cover of Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Bell had last sung “Ain’t No Sunshine” with UM at the 2010 edition of Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam in Asheville, NC. Later in the evening Widespread Panic took the stage at the tennis stadium for two sets. UM guitarist Jake Cinninger and keyboardist Joel Cummins emerged towards the middle of the second set for Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain.” Cummins and Cinninger stayed out, and UM percussionist Andy Farag joined the fray for a take on another Funkadelic classic in “Red Hot Mama.” Farag also lent a hand during a drum segment that came out of “Red Hot Mama.”
