Chris Robinson Recruits Dave Schools, Jay Lane & More At Terrapin Crossroads

This past Friday night, Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California hosted the third of three Chris Robinson’s Hootenanny Heroes performances. Each of the shows found the CRB frontman accompanied by a different lineup of Bay Area-based musicians to perform a setlist consisting mostly of covers written in the ’50s – ’70s.

The Chris Robinson’s Hootenanny Heroes finale saw Chris Robinson joined by Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools, RatDog/Electric Beethoven drummer Jay Lane, The Mother Hips’ Greg Loiacono on guitar and CRB/Black Crowes keyboardist Adam MacDougall. Robinson & Co. began Friday’s first set with “I’m A Man” by The Spencer Davis Group. Next up was the lone original to be performed during the run – a take on “Seeing Things” off the Crowes’ debut LP, Shake Your Money Maker. The opening stanza also included covers of “The Letter,” “Shakey Ground,” “Out Of The City (Into The Country Life),” “Gomorrah,” “I Been Hoodood” and “Blues Power.”

Chris Robinson’s Hootenanny Heroes focused on songs from legendary acts during Friday’s closing frame. Up first was a cover of Traffic’s “Evening Blue” followed by Smokey Robinson’s “I Second That Emotion” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” by Bob Dylan. The five-piece then served up Graham Nash’s “I Used To Be King” along with “I Can’t Stand The Rain” by Ann Peebles. Chris and his band brought the second set to a close with versions of Little Feat’s “Dixie Chicken,” Dave Mason’s “Shouldn’t Have Took More Than You Gave” and Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride.”

Friday’s encore saw Robinson lead his troupe on “Hey Hey What Can I Do” by Led Zeppelin. Chris Robinson kicks off a short solo acoustic run on Tuesday in Santa Cruz.
