Chris Robinson & Neal Casal Discuss Their Classic Acoustic Guitars

By Andy Kahn Oct 11, 2017 9:01 am PDT

The Chris Robinson Brotherhood guitarists Chris Robinson and Neal Casal recently performed a session for Acoustic Guitar magazine. The pair of band mates also recorded a segment in which they detailed their classic acoustic guitars.

Robinson details the circumstances surrounding his ownership of a 1959 Martin D-18 acoustic guitar. He purchased the instrument in Los Angeles in the early-1990s after having played a similar model owned by his folk singing father. Casal notes that Robinson has written “hundreds” of songs on his Martin Dreadnought.

Casal tells the recent tale of his purchasing an acoustic 1952 Gibson SJ at a Philadelphia music store. The instrument caught Casal’s eye just as he was about to leave and he “hit one chord and it was all over.” He left the store without buying it, but returned a few weeks later and bought the (expensive) guitar which was used on The CRB’s new studio album Barefoot In The Head. The pair chat about their instruments in the below video:
