Carlos Santana Joins Eric Clapton In London

Eric Clapton was Sunday’s headliner as part of this year’s British Summer Time Hyde Park concert series in London. Clapton capped his performance by welcomed fellow performer and legendary guitarist Carlos Santana to sit-in during the evening’s encore.
Clapton’s performance at Hyde Park marked his return to the same location that his former band Blind Faith made their debut in 1969. Clapton’s Blind Faith band mate Steve Winwood was also on yesterday’s bill, but the two did not appear together Sunday. Slowhand did bring out vocalist Marcy Levy to perform a pair of songs she co-wrote with Clapton, “Lay Down Sally” and “The Core.”
The set opened with “Somebody’s Knocking” by J.J. Cale and progressed through staples such as “Key to the Highway” and “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man” as well as Derek and the Dominos’ “Got to Get Better in a Little While.” A four-song seated acoustic segment featured classics “Driftin’ Blues” and “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out,” along with Clapton favorites “Layla” and “Tears In Heaven.” Sunday’s set also saw electric takes on “Wonderful Tonight,” Robert Johnson’s “Crossroads” and “Little Queen Of Spades” and Cale’s “Cocaine.”

Santana emerged for the encore, which was a cover of Joe Cocker’s “High Time We Went” that had Paul Carrack handling lead vocals. Watch that collaboration and other audience-shot videos from Hyde Park below:
