After Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band ended a Reunion-Era-record-streak of 11-shows without a debut last Saturday, August 26 in Foxborough, Massachusetts by breaking out “Lonesome Day” and “Seven Nights To Rock,” The Boss trotted out another song for the first time in 2023 last night in East Rutherford, New Jersey. “Sherry Darling” saw full-band action on Wednesday in the middle of Springsteen and the E Street Band’s first of three shows at MetLife Stadium following over six years on the shelf .
The ensemble came out of the gates with the recently revived “Lonesome Day.” Springsteen and company then mixed material from 2020’s Letter To You with mid- and late-1970s numbers such as “Night,” “Prove It All Night” and “Out In The Street.” Then The Boss strolled to the mic and said, “Here’s a little summer beach music for you” as the band launched in their first “Sherry Darling” since February 21, 2017. The gem off The River showcased saxophonist Jake Clemons and the brotherhood of guitarist Bruce Springsteeen and Little Steven Van Zandt.

The band displayed no signs of rust as they made it “Sherry Darling.” Penned by Springsteen, the song has a bright feel disparate from most other tracks on 1980’s The River. Bruce threw in a few hula dance moves while Vak Zant soloed. “Sherry Darling” fit perfectly beween “Out In The Street” and “Kitty’s Back.”

After “Kitty’s Back” came the evening’s lone cover, “Nightshift,” and ode to New Jersey locale “Atlantic City.” The rest of the set played out in nearly identical fashion to all other 2023 tour stops including a encore loaded with favorites like “Born To Run,” “Dancing In The Dark” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.” Springsteen brings the band back to MetLife Stadium on Friday.
