Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson Covers ‘All The Young Dudes’ With Billie Joe Armstrong & The Coverups

The frontmen of two of rock’s biggest bands joined forces last night in San Diego when Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson joined Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and his cover band The Coverups for a performance of “All The Young Dudes.”

Armstrong & The Coverups played a 26-song set Thursday at the annual Fandom Party, the unofficial kickoff to San Diego Comic-Con. The show, presented by Xbox’s Halo: Campaign Evolved, took place at FLOAT inside the Hard Rock Hotel.

Bruce Dickinson is in San Diego ahead of an appearance at a Z2 signing booth at San Diego Comic-Con today. Iron Maiden are gearing up to launch the North American leg of their 50th Anniversary Tour on August 29 in Toronto.

Bruce Dickinson joined The Coverups early in the show for “All The Young Dudes.” Dickinson handled lead vocals while Armstrong played guitar alongside Jason White (Green Day touring member), with Bill Schneider on bass (Green Day tour manager) and Chris Dugan (Green Day audio engineer) on drums.

Penned by David Bowie, Mott The Hoople scored a hit with “All The Young Dudes” in 1972. Bruce Dickinson covered the song for his first solo album, 1990’s Tattooed Millionaire.

The rest of The Coverups’ performance was heavy on classic rock radio staples including “I Wanna Be Sedated,” “I Think We’re Alone Now,” “American Girl,” “I Fought The Law,” “Do You Wanna Dance?,” “I Melt With You,” “Should I Stay Or Should I Go,” “We Got The Beat,” “Crazy Train” and “Surrender.”

Armstrong also guided the band through Nirvana’s “Drain You,” which he dedicated to late L7 bassist Jennifer Finch two nights earlier at The Roxy in West Hollywood. Finch died on July 18 from an aggressive form of brain cancer.
