Brendan Bayliss Plays Solo Show In Chicago

Brendan Bayliss of Umphrey’s McGee played a rare solo show last night in his hometown of Chicago at the Tonic Room. Bayliss treated the rowdy crowd to a pair of sets filled with Umphrey’s originals and a wide array of covers.

The guitarist opened the solo acoustic performance with a first set heavy on UM originals including “Similar Skin,” “Cut The Cable,” “Alex’s House” and “No Diablo.” Brendan worked Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire” within “Puppet String” and showed off a lyrical stew he’s toying with in the middle of “August.” Bayliss welcomed vocalist Michelle Hallman to share the stage towards the beginning of the second set for covers of Edie Brickell & The New Bohemians’ “Circle” as well as “Under African Skies” by Brickell’s husband Paul Simon. Last night’s second set also featured covers of Dave Matthews Band’s “Pay For What You Get,” Ween’s “Baby Bitch” and “Debra” by Beck. The night came to a close with an encore containing the 30db original “Liar” and Umphrey’s “Hajimemashite.”
