Brendan Bayliss Covers Jim Croce, Bright Eyes, Gerry Rafferty & More For ‘Dry Not, Wine Not?’

Brendan Bayliss continued his Dry Not, Wine Not? livestream series on Friday. The Umphrey’s McGee guitarist offered up covers from Jim Croce, Bright Eyes, Gerry Rafferty and more.

Bayliss entered the stream in his usual faux oblivious fashion playing a mbira, also known as a thumb piano. Brendan showed that he was continuing his sobriety streak with a non-alcoholic beer before remarking about how quiet it was without Andy Frasco, who joined in for the maiden voyage of Dry Not the week previous. BB then opened with a requested Umphrey’s McGee number, “Morning Song,” ahead of Jim Croce’s “Operator (That’s Not the Way It Feels).” Umphrey’s “The Crooked One” then headed into “Mulche’s Odyssey,” a Jake Cinninger song dating back to Jake’s band Ali Baba’s Tahini and usually sung by Cinninger. “Mulche’s” in turn segued into Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).”

More UM came in the form of “Upward” followed by “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House. Another Umphrey’s section kicked off with “Much Obliged” into “Stibko’s Ascension” and capped off by Geroge Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass.” Bayliss then got into the covers in earnest beginning with “Lua” by Bright Eyes. BB then dropped Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” by popular demand ahead of 30db’s — Brendan’s project with the late great Jeff Austin — “Return Item.” The Beatles’ deep track “Baby You’re A Rich Man” came next ahead of a choice cover of Bananarama’s “Cruel Summer.” Annie Bayliss then sang Gerry Rafferty’s “Right Down The Line” before Brendan closed things out on piano with Billy Joel’s “Vienna.”
