Branford Marsalis Guests With Dave Matthews Band In Raleigh

Coming into Dave Matthews Band’s summer tour fans knew two things were in store -special guests and new material. Those witnessing last night’s DMB show at Walnut Creek in Raleigh were treated to both as the group debuted a new original and were joined by backing vocalists The Lovely Ladies and master saxophonist Branford Marsalis.

Marsalis emerged in the middle of the electric, second set to add saxophone to “Lover Lay Down,” “Typical Situation” and “Jimi Thing.” Branford had previously sat-in with the Dave Matthews Band twice -July 21, 2010 in Charlotte and December 12, 2012 in Raleigh. While the saxophonist had performed “Lover Lay Down” and “Jimi Thing” with DMB in the past, last night was the first time he jammed on “Typical Situation” with the group. After Marsalis left the stage, Dave called up the “Lovely Ladies” triumvirate of backing vocalists. The ladies backed DMB on the debut of “Be Yourself,” the tour’s second new original, as well as “Save Me,” “Rooftop” and “Stay (Wasting Time).” Matthews mentioned the band is working on new material for an album they are currently recording and advised many guests were expected to sit-in this tour in a new interview with Rolling Stone.

Next up for the Dave Matthews Band is a performance at Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia tonight.
