Brandi Carlile Celebrates New Year’s Eve With Sleater-Kinney & KT Tunstall In Portland

Brandi Carlile held a New Year’s Eve concert at Portland’s Moda Center that featured several special guests joining the singer-songwriter. Sleater-Kinney, KT Tunstall and Matt Chamberlain joined Carlile and her bandmates during Saturday’s celebratory show.

Chamberlain, who contributed to Carlile’s 2007 sophomore album, The Story, was the first guest to emerge. The drummer took over the kit for a cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs,” a song whose intro has been played by Carlile a number of times but New Year’s Eve was a fully formed rendition. Carlile handed over lead vocals to bassist Phil Hanseroth and stood side stage while he and his twin brother, guitarist Tim Hanseroth, ripped through “War Pigs” with Chamberlain.

Later in the main set, singer-songwriter KT Tunstall and Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney came onstage for an extended collaboration that began with Tunstall helming a cover of “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” that saw Brownstein playing guitar. The guests and Carlile then took on Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”

The musicians launched into “What Can I Say” before being cut off by the countdown to New Year’s Eve. After toasting the New Year, the music resumed as balloons fell on the audience and Tunstall, Tucker and Brownstein (back on guitar) stuck around to help cover “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.”
