Joni Mitchell & Annie Lennox Among Brandi Carlile’s ‘Friends’ At Hollywood Bowl

Brandi Carlile brought out an impressive roster of special guests during her concert at the Hollywood Bowl. Billed as “Brandi Carlile & Friends,” Saturday’s show in Los Angeles featured appearances by Joni Mitchell, Annie Lennox, Lucius, Blake Mills and Wendy and Lisa.

Mitchell previously appeared with Carlile at the Newport Folk Festival and The Gorge. The 79-year-old legendary folk musician came out during the encore at the Hollywood Bowl. With the other musicians joining in a “Joni Jam” format, Mitchell led performances of three of her songs, “Shine,” “Ladies Of The Canyon” and the show-closing “Circle Game.”

Lennox’s guest spot also featured three songs, first leading her standout “Why.” Next came “No More ‘I Love You’s,’” a song by The Lover Speaks that Lennox recorded in 1995. Lennox also helped perform “Love Is a Stranger” by Eurythmics, the duo she co-founded with Dave Stewart.

Earlier in the evening, Lucius’ Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig sang their song “The Man I’ll Never Find.” Allison Russell was given the spotlight to lead a performance of her song “Requiem.” Blake Mills and Carlile teamed up for a rendition of his song “Press My Luck.”

Wendy & Lisa – former members of Prince’s band The Revolution, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman – augmented a take on The Purple One’s “Mountains.” Carlile’s wife, Catherine Carlile, was also part of the collaborative evening, joining Brandi on a cover of Indigo Girls’ “Closer To Fine,” which the couple recorded for the Barbie soundtrack.
