Brandi Carlile brought her Beyond These Silent Days Tour to Madison Square Garden for a sold-out show in New York City on Saturday night. Carlile was joined by a nine-piece at The Garden and welcomed special guests Brittany Howard, Allison Russell and Celisse at various points of the night.
The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter treated fans to material from throughout her career over the course of the two-hour performance to close the tour. Celisse emerged towards the middle of Carlile’s set for a medley featuring David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and Radiohead’s “Creep” that has been a tour staple. The pairing was followed by Brandi and longtime bandmates “the twins” — Phil and Tim Hanseroth — offering a stripped-down trio rendition of “Cannonball” from 2007’s The Story.
Brandi went heavy on material off her latest LP, 2021’s In These Silent Days, as seven cuts from the album made the setlist at MSG. “Broken Horses,” “You And Me On The Rock,” “Mama Werewolf,” “This Time Tomorrow,” “Right On Time” and “Sinners, Saints & Fools” came within Saturday’s main set. Carlile’s extended encore at The Garden included In These Silent Days standout “Stay Gentle.”
The six-song encore began with a take on Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” played a day after Brandi Carlile revealed she'll join Mitchell at The Gorge for the Echoes Through The Canyon concerts next June. Allison Russell then came out to reprise her “You’re Not Alone” duet with Brandi Carlile. Another stellar guest spot ensued when opener Brittany Howard joined forces with Carlile and her band for a powerful cover of James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”
Members of Brandi and band members’ families took the stage after Howard’s appearance to help out on “Hold Out Your Hand” from 2018’s By The Way, I Forgive You. Carlile then played the aforementioned “Stay Gentle” before saying farewell with a solo acoustic “Over The Rainbow.” Next up is a New Year’s Eve celebration in Portland, Oregon.
