Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh played his own Terrapin Crossroads venue in San Rafael, California last night with a Phil Lesh & Friends lineup featuring guitarists Stu Allen and Ross James, keyboardist Scott Guberman and drummer Alex Koford. Boyd Tinsley of the Dave Matthews Band was on hand as a special guest to add fiddle to a show celebrating Stu Allen’s birthday.
Phil Lesh & Friends played one long set followed by an encore on Tuesday night. Guberman channeled Brent Mydland on the show-opening “Gimme Some Lovin'” before the birthday boy stepped to the mic for “They Love Each Other.” Ross James then had a turn in the spotlight “Next Time You See Me.” Allen’s “West LA Fadeaway” solo was a highlight of the night as was Tinsley’s contributions to a wild “Cumberland Blues.” While the set focused on material from the Grateful Dead’s live repertoire, the big surprise came with a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Bitch” within the set and of “Don’t Do It” as the encore. The main set concluded with a run of GD classics: “China Cat Sunflower,” “Viola Lee Blues” and “Saint Stephen” followed by “I Know You Rider.” Guberman led a round of “Happy Birthday” for Stu as the crowd sang along ahead of “Don’t Do It.”
