Boyd Tinsley Guests With Phil Lesh & Friends At Terrapin Crossroads

On Sunday, Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California hosted a “Backyard Blowout” just outside of the Marin County venue. The day featured a whopping three sets from proprietor Phil Lesh‘s Phil Lesh & Friends as well as a set a piece from the Terrapin All Stars, Cosmic Twang and Midnight North. Dave Matthews Band fiddle player Boyd Tinsley was Sunday’s surprise guest as he added to the final two Phil Lesh & Friends sets and the Cosmic Twang set at the “Backyard Blowout.”

Sunday’s action started off with a set from the Terrapin All Stars featuring Stu Allen, Scott Law, Craig MacArthur, Brian Rashap and Alex Koford. Phil Lesh’s band for the three sets saw him joined by jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan, his son Grahame Lesh on guitar, Barry Sless on guitar and pedal steel, Mookie Siegel on keyboards, John Molo on drums and Elliott Peck and Koford on vocals. Tinsley came aboard for the final two Phil & Friends’ sets as well as a guest spot with Cosmic Twang.

Jordan showed off his finger-tapping skills on a number of instrumental covers including “Eleanor Rigby,” “The Sound Of Silence” and “Little Wing.” Stanley also led an excursion through “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” in the middle of “Dark Star.” Peck fronted the group on a cover of Gillian Welch’s “Look At Miss Ohio.” Grahame, Phil and Alex handled the bulk of the lead singing on the many Grateful Dead classics played on Sunday. The marathon day and evening came to a close with a singalong “Not Fade Away.”

Over the weekend, the venue announced the cancellation of three Phil Lesh & Friends shows.
