Bob Weir & Wolf Bros Fit Tour Debuts Into Chicago Theatre Opener

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros kicked off a two-night stand at the Chicago Theatre on Wednesday. The three-piece band’s Halloween show featured a handful of tour debuts, which included an evening appropriate cover of “Werewolves Of London.”

The trio got things going in the Windy City with a pair of Grateful Dead classics, serving up “Cassidy” and “Friend Of The Devil.” After addressing some technical issues Weir would strap on his electric guitar for a memorable take on Bob Dylan’s “Queen Jane Approximately.” Weir, drummer Jay Lane and bassist Don Was would dip into the RatDog catalog next for a trio of songs delivering takes on “Even So,” “October Queen” and “Two Djinn.” Willie Dixon’s blues classic “Little Red Rooster” would follow. The band then dug in on a pair of debuts as the threesome offered up their interpretation on Wake Of The Flood’s “Weather Report Suite” and its traditional partner “Let It Grow” to close out the opening frame.

Weir would continue to mine his RatDog songbook as “Ashes & Glass” opened up the second stanza. The Evening Moods cut would see the band drop into “Don’t Let Go” before returning back to “Ashes & Glass.” Wolf Bros’ third debut of the night followed with Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning.” “All Along The Watchtower,” “Wharf Rat” and “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider” brought the set to end. Weir & Co. played two separate encores last night. The first saw them go with what has become a Halloween classic, Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves Of London.” The trio then returned for their second encore, looking to yet another Dylan tune as “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue” brought their first of two in Chicago to a close.
