Phil Lesh, Jackie Greene and the Terrapin Allstars kicked off a three-night run with help from special guest Bob Weir on Tuesday at Terrapin Crossroads’ Beach Park facility in San Rafael, California. The Grateful Dead/Dead & Company guitarist emerged halfway through last night’s lone set for his second surprise appearance of the week at the venue and stuck around for the rest of the evening.
The Terrapin Allstars lineup for the run finds Phil and Jackie joined by multi-instrumentalists Lebo (Dan Lebowitz) and Jason Crosby plus drummer Jeremy Hoenig. Greene handled lead vocals on the “Scarlet Begonias” opener which bled into a Lesh-sung “Cold Rain & Snow.” Lebo then stepped into the spotlight for a rendition of Kris Kristofferson’s “Me & Bobby McGee.”

Jackie fronted the ensemble on “Brown-Eyed Women” before Lebo sang the tender GD ballad “Ship Of Fools.” The quintet then took it up a notch with “Viola Lee Blues.” Bobby arrived at the venue during “Viola Lee” as per Deadheadland’s report and was on stage by the time the song ended. Weir showed off his vocal and rhythm guitar skills on a languid “Feel Like A Stranger” and shared vocal duties with his Grateful Dead band mate for “Jack Straw.”
Last night’s set continued with a throbbing “Samson & Delilah” and heartfelt “Wharf Rat.” Jackie Greene then led the ensemble through The Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers” to bring the performance to a close. Phil Lesh, Jackie Greene and the Terrapin Allstars return to Beach Park tonight for their second of three shows at the outdoor space.
