If Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir ever retires from the road, he may have a career as a wedding officiant in store. Weir officiated a wedding for the second time in less than a year before Saturday night’s Dead & Company show at Citi Field in New York City.
Billy Procida, the chief executive officer of Procida Funding and Advisors, married Kelly Lauerman backstage at Citi Field on Saturday and Weir did the honors of officiating according to Page Six. Procida saw 200 Dead shows before Jerry died and is (in)famous for bringing Donald Trump on stage to introduce RatDog in 2006.
Weir had previously officiated the wedding of Live Nation Philadelphia chief Geoff Gordon during last fall’s Campfire Tour. “Seventeen years ago I jumped on stage and did an encore with [Weir] and we became great friends,” Procida told Page Six about his friendship with Bobby. Billy’s wedding to Kelly took place at Citi Field’s VIP Room. Billy added that Weir, “came in and said a poem and the ‘I do’s,’” with another attendee telling the Post, “He said beautiful things.”
Procida shared a story about the “beautiful and funny” ceremony as he explained “at the end, [we] forgot to sign the marriage license. He was getting on a golf cart to go on stage and I had to chase him!” While John Mayer was not on hand, D&C keyboardist Jeff Chimenti stood beside the mogul. Page Six reports the ceremony lasted 15 minutes with 50 to 60 in attendance. The guitarist took the time to chat with those at the ceremony. The report also states Procida and his bride invited 2,000 guests to take up sections of the ballpark for the actual concert.
