Last night Kevin Morby (formerly of Woods), Sam Cohen, Eric D. Johnson (of Fruit Bats), Josh Kaufman and Joe Russo (of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead) assembled at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California for the first of three “Alone & Together” shows by the collective. Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir was announced as a special guest shortly ahead of the concert and joined ensemble on several tunes Thursday evening.
Described as “a series wherein some of your favorite singer/songwriters/musicians get together and cover one another, in addition to playing their own songs, choice covers, and surprise jams” this is the third installment of the collaborative “Alone & Together” series. For Thursday’s show Weir joined his Furthur band mate Russo on “Only A River,” which Bobby recorded on his Kaufman-produced 2016 solo album Blue Mountain.
Weir also accompanied the group on the traditional Grateful Dead staple “Peggy-O,” the Blue Mountain cut “Lay My Lily Down” and Dead classics “Bird Song” and “Stella Blue.” Here’s audience-shot video of Bobby and the crew from Sweetwater last night captured by Ratdog Tour:
The “Alone & Together” series continues tomorrow night in Los Angeles and Sunday in San Francisco. Here’s video of a portion of the show featuring Johnson leading a cover of “Oh, Sweet Nuthin’” captured by brenttbrow:
