Bob Dylan launched his Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour 2024 on Friday with the first of two concerts at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The show saw the legendary singer-songwriter slotting in a debut cover of Jimmy Rogers’ “Walking By Myself.”
One of the musicians who helped shape the electrified Chicago blues sound, Jimmy Rogers was a member of Muddy Waters’ band in the early 1950s. He released “Walking By Myself” as a solo artist in 1956, with the song breaking into the R&B chart.

Dylan premiered “Walking By Myself” in the 13th song slot of his Rough and Rowdy Ways Tour setlist with the tune replacing Johnny Mercer’s “That Old Black Magic.” The singer-songwriter also included “Walking By Myself” in the March 2 setlist. Other than the Rogers nod, Bob Dylan and his band — guitarist Doug Lancio, bassist Tony Garnier, drummer Jerry Pentecost, guitarist Bob Britt and multi-instrumentalist Donnie Herron — stuck close to the Rough and Rowdy Ways setlist kicking things off with “Watching The River Flow” and delivering nearly every song on his 2020 album save for the epic “A Murder Most Foul.”
Additional classics included “Most Likely You Go Your Way and I’ll Go Mine” and “When I Paint My Masterpiece.” The latter, as Stereogum reported, saw Dylan purportedly address a heckler who shouted “play something we know!”
Bob is no stranger to unruly audience members as his infamous “Dylan Goes Electric” world tour in 1966 saw those who didn’t like the folk hero playing rock ‘n’ roll booing at every show. The outstanding Bootleg Series Vol. 4: Bob Dylan Live 1966, The “Royal Albert Hall” Concert captured a “fan” yelling “Judas!”
The recording also captures Dylan saying “play it fucking loud” to his backing group who would go on to become The Band ahead of a fiery “Like A Rolling Stone.” Friday’s Fort Lauderdale concert saw Dylan letting the music do the talking once again by setting the “Masterpiece” lyrics to what sounds like the Four Lads 1958 hit “Istanbul (Not Constantinople).”
