Watch Black Crowes Debut Velvet Underground Cover & Perform New Songs In Las Vegas

The Black Crowes delivered a two-night stand at the Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas over Super Bowl Weekend. The renowned rockers performed two new songs from their upcoming album Happiness Bastards and unveiled a Velvet Underground cover to conclude the run on Saturday, February 10.

Happiness Bastards — frontman Chris Robinson, guitarist Rich Robinson and company’s first studio album since 2009’s Before The Frost… Until The Freeze — arrives on March 15 via Silver Arrow Records. The Crowes launched the Vegas run with the album’s full-tilt boogie opener “Bedside Manners.” The band would also perform the song on Saturday. Watch that performance below:

The first part of the set also boasted classics like “Sting Me” and “Twice As Hard” along with a bustout of “Paint an 8,” from the 2006 compilation album The Lost Crowes featuring material recorded in the 1990s. A pair of hits from The Black Crowes’ 1990 debut album Shake Your Money Maker followed including the band’s cover of Otis Redding’s “Hard to Handle” and “She Talks to Angels.” The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion standout “Thorn In My Pride” came next.

After “Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution,” The Black Crowes delivered Happiness Bastards‘ lead single “Wanting and Waiting,” which Chris Robinson described as an album that is “our love letter to rock ‘n’ roll.” The band recently unveiled the song at an intimate concert in Los Angeles, where they also debuted “Bedside Manners.” Watch the band bring “Wanting and Waiting” to Vegas below:

Favorites “Jealous Again” and “Remedy” concluded the main set. The Black Crowes encore on night one in Sin City came in the form of “Virtue and Vice” off 1999’s By Your Side. Watch video of “Jealous Again” from Friday below:

The Black Crowes opened night two with Southern Harmony’s “No Speak No Slave.” Songs from Saturday not played on Friday included Money Maker’s “Thick ‘n’ Thin,” “(Only) Halfway to Everywhere” from 1996’s Three Snakes and One Charm, Southern Harmony’s “My Morning Song,” By Your Side’s “Kickin’ My Heart Around” and Lions (2001) standout “Soul Singing.”

The Crowes encore saw them premiering a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “White Light/White Heat.” The song is the opening track from VU’s 1968 album of the same name. The Black Crowes version was a bit more 1970s rock while the original features VU’s proto-typical punk rock sound.
