Watch The Black Crowes’ Chris & Rich Robinson Go Acoustic For ‘Southern Harmony’ Classics

The Black Crowes will release an expanded edition of their 1992 sophomore studio album, The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion, this Friday, December 15 via American Recordings/UMe. Co-founders Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson recently assembled at The Village Studios in Los Angeles to play stripped-down versions of songs from the record with footage of two shared thus far.

The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion reissue will be available in multiple formats including a box set loaded with bonus material. The box set consists of the remastered original album as well as unreleased studio recordings, rare B-sides and a live performance captured at Houston’s Sam Houston Coliseum on February 6, 1993. Rich and Chris worked alongside producer George Drakoulias on the forthcoming collection.

The Vilage Studios is located in a vintage Masonic Temple in West L.A. Chris and Rich Robinson worked through a number of The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion cuts as an acoustic duo during a session filmed to promote the reissue. The Robinson Brothers’ performances of “Thorn In My Pride” and “Hotel Illness” have been posted on The Black Crowes’ YouTube. Footage of “Bad Luck Blue Eyes” from the intimate session premieres on Wednesday, December 14 at 12 p.m. ET.

“Thorn In My Pride” and “Hotel Illness” were each issued as singles in 1992. The former is the third most-played song live for The Black Crowes according to Setlist.FM, while the latter is the sixteenth. Chris and Rich wrote both songs as well as the others featured on The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion with the exception of “Time Will Tell,” the Bob Marley cover which closes the LP.
