The Black Crowes Detail ‘The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion’ Box Set Loaded With Previously Unreleased Tracks

The Black Crowes announced a box set for their 1992 sophomore album The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion. The collection arrives on December 15 via American Recordings/UMe in a variety of formats including 4-LP, 3-CD and digital.

Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson and Rich Robinson teamed back up with Southern Harmony producer George Drakoulias to curate the box set. Along with a remastered edition of the original album including classics like “Remedy, “Thorn In My Pride,” “Sting Me” and more, the collection contains 14 previously unreleased tracks and rare B-sides.

Additionally, the set features a live recording from February 6, 1993 at Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston as well as a previously unreleased live studio performance captured at the end of the Southern Harmony sessions in early 1992 at Southern Tracks Studio in the band’s hometown of Atlanta

“We’ve always thought that the music on Southern Harmony and Musical Companion was made of a certain magic that was in the air for us in 1992,” Chris Robinson said of the era. “This special box set represents all the ingredients of the spell we were under.”

“I always felt that Southern Harmony was us coming into our own as a band and creating our sound.” Rich Robinson added. “We made the record in 8 days. Every song was one or two takes. No more than that. It was a snapshot of a band possessing all of its powers, and it still resonates with me to this day.”
