Watch Kanika Moore & Daniel Donato Join Billy & The Kids For ‘Ship Of Fools’ In Baltimore

Billy & The Kids shared official video of “Ship Of Fools” from their August 16th concert at Pier Six Pavilion in Baltimore. Vocalist Kanika Moore sang the Grateful Dead ballad during the band’s first of two Pier To Pier shows.

The Doom Flamingo frontwoman joined GD drummer Bill Kreutzmann‘s ensemble for half the show in Baltimore, while mandolinist/vocalist Sierra Hull sat-in for portions of the Pier To Pier finale in New York City on August 18. Guitarist Daniel Donato augmented the core band of Kreutzmann, percussionist/drummer Jeff Franca, guitarist Tom Hamilton, keyboardist Aron Magner and bassist Reed Mathis in both Baltimore and New York City.

Penned by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter, “Ship Of Fools” was debuted live by the Grateful Dead in February 1974. A studio version appeared on From The Mars Hotel, an album released four months later. The song was played by the Dead over 200 times through June 1995.

Billy & The Kids performed “Ship Of Fools” to start an encore in Baltimore that also included a take on Bruce Springsteen and Patti Smith’s “Because The Night.” Kreutzmann shared the following on Instagram in regards to the Baltimore encore:

We encored with it (coupled with our first-time cover of Patti Smith’s “Because the Night”) because while we looked out from the stage at Baltimore’s Pier Six, we could see actual historical warships permanently docked in the harbor — you know… “Ship of Fools.”

After Kanika took the wheel, I don’t know that this song will ever be the same. Thanks Kanika!
