Billy Strings' comeback from a broken leg continued on Friday, when he performed with both The Travelin’ McCourys and the Del McCoury Band at the Charlotte Bluegrass Festival in Michigan. Strings stood for his guest appearances with The McCourys unlike recent sit-ins with Primus and Trey Anastasio.
The Charlotte Bluegrass Festival holds a special place in Billy Strings’ heart as the first bluegrass fest he attended as a youngster with his father, Terry Barber. Strings returned to the event last year for a headlining performance. Barber joined his son and his band for a portion of the set in 2025 and was back on stage with Strings and the Del McCoury Band on Friday.
Billy Strings’ initial appearance at the 2026 Charlotte Bluegrass Festival came during the afternoon. The guitarist was The Travelin’ McCourys’ special guest for a version of his own song “Highway Hypnosis,” a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Scarlet Begonias” and a performance of Ronnie McCourys’ “Baltimore Johnny.” Strings handled lead vocals on “Highway Hypnosis.”
The Del McCoury Band brought Strings back out during their headlining set. Terry Barber was also in the mix for takes on bluegrass classics “Can’t You Hear Me Calling” by Bill Monroe and The Stanley Brothers’ “The Lonesome River.”
Billy Strings was on his own two feet for the entirety of his time on stage on Friday. Strings broke his leg in April during the encore break of his concert in Charlottesville, Virginia while trying to pull off a skateboarding trick. His next scheduled gig is an Austin City Limits taping this Thursday, July 2.
