Billy & The Kids Win March Madness 2022 Live Covers Tournament
Guests Billy Strings and James Casey contributed to the cover of “Tangled Up In Blue” by Bob Dylan.
JamBase’s March Madness Live Covers Tournament Championship was won by Billy & The Kids with Billy Strings and saxophonist James Casey covering Bob Dylan‘s “Tangled Up In Blue.” The collaborative performance defeated Phish’s cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 Was 9.”
The path to the championship for Billy & The Kids, which features Grateful Dead/Dead & Company drummer Bill Kreutzmann along with keyboardist Aron Magner, guitarist Tom Hamilton and bassist Reed Mathis, began with a Round 1 win against The Avett Brothers with Warren Haynes and their joint cover of “Tangled Up In Blue.”
Recorded in May 2021 in Kauai, Hawaii as part of “Grateful Mahalo: Billy Kreutzmann’s 75th Birthday Pa’ina,” the Billy & The Kids cover rolled through Round 2 by defeating Joe Russo’s Almost Dead and their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb.” Round 3 saw Billy & The Kids decisively defeat moe.’s cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”
The Final Four featured the Grateful Dead drummer and his crew eliminating Goose’s cover of the Dead’s “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.” The aforementioned Championship was a contest between Billy & The Kids’ cover of Dylan’s classic from his 1975 album, Blood On The Tracks, against Phish’s recent debut cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 Was 9” from his 1967 album, Axis: Bold as Love.
With a mere 4% advantage, Billy & Kids with Billy Strings and James Casey took home JamBase’s March Madness 2022 Live Covers Tournament Championship. This was the second straight win for Billy Strings, who won the inaugural March Madness Live Covers Tournament in 2021 with a cover of the Grateful Dead's “Wharf Rat.”
