The latest episode of OsirisInside The Musician’s Brain With Chris Pandolfi podcast features the first part of an interview with Bill Nershi of The String Cheese Incident. Hosted by The Infamous Stringdusters banjoist Chris Pandolfi, the installment starts with a discussion of the ‘Dusters’ songwriting process.

Chris Pandolfi begins the episode by diving into the show’s social media mailbox to discuss his band’s songcraft. He gives the example of “Planets,” a song found on The Infamous Stringdusters’ 2019 album, Rise Sun. Panda explains why the group shares songwriting credits and what takes place during pre-production sessions. He also talks about the reasoning behind The Infamous Stringdusters’ decision to keep releasing albums instead of a single here and there.

The majority of the episode is devoted to Pandolfi’s chat with Nershi. Billy and Chris were band mates in the Emmitt-Nershi Band and their rapport is smooth and easy. Nershi speaks of his influences, SCI’s early days and some of the huge decisions that helped the band navigate the music industry. Billy and Panda discuss how Cheese approaches songwriting and the importance of not saying no to suggestions from other members of the group. Additional topics include the founding of The String Cheese Incident’s SCI Fidelity label, how the song “Bollymunster” came together and the genesis of SCI’s Sound Lab facility.
