Buck Meek Teams With Big Thief Bandmates For New Solo Album ‘The Mirror’

Big Thief‘s Buck Meek is back with a new solo single, “Gasoline.” The track initiates the rollout for Meek’s new album, The Mirror, out February 27 via 4AD and featuring work from both his Big Thief bandmates.

Buck Meek tapped BT’s James Krivchenia to produce The Mirror. The pair endeavored in fusing “the band’s live, kinetic energy with an oblique electronic world,” as per press materials for the record, which went on to describe Krivchenia’s production approach:

From production projects including Big Thief’s Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You and his recent solo record, Performing Belief, Krivchenia’s work is enlivened through electronic elements, always seeking to deepen sound. The concept for The Mirror welcomed a collective atmosphere in which simultaneous experiment could occur—the musicians responded to each other in real time, while their instruments triggered modular synthesizers.

Contributors on The Mirror include Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker along with ambient musician Alex Somers (synthesizer, toy microphone, piano) and Mary Lattimore who lent the sounds of her prismatic harp. A revolving door of drummers include Jonathan Wilson and Kyle Crane.

Buck’s brother Dylan Meek offered keyboards and vocals while Adrian Olsen delivered modular synths. Vocalists include Staci Foster, Jolie Holland and Germaine Dunes. The Mirror was recorded at Dunes and Meek’s Los Angeles log cabin studio, Ringo Bingo, where Buck tracked vocals on the front porch looking in on the musicians playing inside.

Fans can get a feeling for The Mirror with its lead single and openng track, “Gasoline,” along with a video directed by Noel Paul. The performance visual features Meek as well as players Ken Woodward, Adam Brisbin and Jesse Quebbeman-Turley. Watch below:
