Big Star’s Jody Stephens was a guest during the encore on Thursday at night five of this year’s annual 8 Nights Of Hanukkah With Yo La Tengo run at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City. Opening act Bill Callahan (Smog) also joined the headliners at the start of last evening’s encore.
Following Yo La Tengo’s main set that featured Joe Puleo on organ during “I Heard You Looking,” the band returned with Callahan to start the encore with a cover of Carly Simon’s “Touched by the Sun.” Stephens then emerged to sing lead on Big Star’s “Way Out West.” The drummer then played a second kit alongside Georgia Hubley on a cover of T. Rex’s “Baby Strange.” The guest drummer then assisted on Big Star’s “December Gurls” (with the lyrics changed to “December boys”) and the show-closing “Blue Moon.”
