Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench confirmed his first solo album in 11 years, The Melancholy Season, arriving March 7 through Dark Horse Records. Tench previewed the record with the title track.
The Melancholy Season follows the longtime Heartbreakers keyboardist’s 2014 solo debut album, You Should Be So Lucky. Tench tapped renowned musician/producer Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Margo Price, Billy Strings) to helm the new LP.

The Melancholy Season sees contributions from a talented cast of musicians including Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek), singer-songwriter Jenny O and Sebastian Steinberg (Fiona Apple, Iron and Wine, Soul Coughing).
Tench previewed the new record with “The Melancholy Season.”
“The meaning of the song is subject to every listener’s interpretation,” Benmont said, “but I will say that the ‘Orion’ in the song is the constellation Orion, whose arrival in the night sky above my old house always signaled the coming of colder weather, and the emotional change that came with it.”
The Melancholy Season arrived with a music video directed by Chloe Badner (Caroline Polachek). Watch below:
