Mike Diamond & Adam Horovitz To Help Christen ‘Beastie Boys Square’ In New York City

Beastie Boys’ Mike Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock) will attend the renaming of “Beastie Boys Square” in New York City. The event is set to take place on Saturday, September 9 starting at 12 p.m. ET on Rivington Street between Ludlow and Essex Streets in the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
The corner of Ludlow and Rivington is where the photo for the iconic cover of Beastie Boys’ 1989 sophomore album Paul’s Boutique was shot. The event at the historic LES locale celebrates the Beastie Boys as well as the 50th anniversary of hip-hop in association with The City of New York and Council Member Chris Marte. The occasion will also include a special guest DJ set by Jon Bless HiFi System, pop-up activations and more.

Beastie Boys’ Mike D, Adrock and the late Adam “MCA” Yauch are inextricably linked with New York City. But Paul’s Boutique is perhaps the album that most celebrates NYC in a body of work full of odes to the trio’s hometown. The LP references “Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, the Village, Chrystie Street, the D Train, Ed Koch, the Knicks, the Yankees, Shea Stadium, the Palladium, Phil Rizzuto, the Atlantic Antic, the New York Post, El Diario, Bernard Goetz, Broadway, Jazzy Jay, Bad Brains and more,” as per a press release.
Additional Beastie Boys-related 50 years of hip-hop celebrations include the cinema premiere of the Spike Jonze-directed Apple Original Film Beastie Boys Story is set for the IFC Center in Greenwich Village with showings on Friday, September 8 and Saturday, September 9 at 11:30 p.m. On Thursday, September 7, SiriusXM will relaunch its Beastie Boys Channel (Ch. 105) featuring classics, deep cuts, live recordings and more.
