Gregg Allman’s Laid Back Festival has continued on after the passing of its namesake and curator. The latest Laid Back Festival stop took place at the Verizon Amphitheatre At Encore Park near Atlanta this past Saturday night. Opening the action were Mississippi blues-rockers Bishop Gunn and Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band featuring Gregg’s fellow Allman Brothers Band co-founding member Jai Johanny Johanson, aka Jaimoe. The drummer’s band treated fans to a medley of Allman Brothers Band songs showing off the handiwork of vocalist Lamar Williams Jr. and guitarist Junior Mack.
The Gregg Allman Band played a rare set without its late founder in honor of Gregg. Guitarist Scott Sharrard led the group on a full performance of Allman’s final album, Southern Blood. Williams and Mack helped augment the GAB. The band’s encore featured versions of “One Way Out” and “Southbound” with Devon Allman contributing to the finale. Devon also emerged during Lynyrd Skynyrd’s set for a “Midnight Rider” performed as a tribute to his father. Lynyrd Skynyrd’s performance also included such hits as “Workin’ For MCA,” “What’s Your Name,” “Simple Man,” “Tuesday’s Gone” and “Sweet Home Alabama.” The legendary Southern Rock outfit encored with “Free Bird.” Check out a gallery of photos taken by Lisa Keel along with a handful of fan-shot videos from Laid Back Festival’s 2017 stop in Alpharetta:
