Following last year’s successful Dear Jerry: Celebrating the Music of Jerry Garcia all-star tribute concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland, organizers Blackbird Presents and the Jerry Garcia Family will host another pair of tributes to the late Grateful Dead guitarist this weekend. The two-night Dear Jerry: Let’s Play 2 event is slated for Friday, October 14 in Washington D.C. and Saturday, October 15 in Fairfax, Virginia.
EagleBank Arena in Fairfax will host the second all-star tribute on Saturday night featuring The Avett Brothers with special guest Warren Haynes joining them for a show billed “This Is 30!” That evening’s performance will feature a re-creation of a JGB concert from October 1986 in honor of Garcia’s return to the stage following a diabetic coma earlier that year.
The Avett Brothers have shared a video previewing Saturday’s concert:
“Jerry Garcia was one of the greatest interpreters of the modern American songbook. We are thrilled to perform these songs for Garcia, Grateful Dead and Avett Brothers fans at this very special concert event,” said Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers. “It’s always special anytime I get to perform with The Avett Brothers but being able to collaborate with them in performing this special Garcia show takes this to a whole different level,” added Warren Haynes. A press release states, “The setlist includes some of Jerry’s most beloved songs and covers, including ‘Mission in the Rain,’ ‘Reuben And Cerise,’ ‘Run For The Roses’ and ‘Tangled Up In Blue.'”
Billed as “Jerry Uncovered” the first all-star concert will be held at DAR Constitution Hall on Friday night and will concentrate on the Jerry Garcia Band repertoire. Haynes, John Medeski, Alison Krauss, Jamey Johnson, Don Was and Raymond Weber will appear in Washington D.C.
