Headliners the Tedeschi Trucks Band brought the Wheels Of Soul Tour to the famed Red Rocks Amphitheater in Morrison, Colorado for performances on Saturday and Sunday. The TTB were joined by special guests including Medeski Martin & Wood keyboardist John Medeski on Saturday and Widespread Panic frontman John Bell on Sunday.
Both shows began with sets from Hot Tuna and The Wood Brothers. The latter were joined by guests each night. Chris Wood’s MMW bandmate John Medeski sat-in on a few tunes including the gospel classic “Up Above My Head” on Saturday which also featured the TTB vocalists. Then, The Wood Brothers welcomed old friend Zac Brown to duet on “Luckiest Man” on Sunday, a song the Zac Brown Band has been known to cover.
Saturday’s Tedeschi Trucks Band set started with a series of originals including a standout “Midnight In Harlem” and a cover of “Keep On Growing.” The cavalcade of guests began with Jorma Kaukoken, Jack Casady and Justin Guip of Hot Tuna adding to Jefferson Airplane’s “3/5th Of A Mile.” Medeski then emerged to join Carey Frank on keyboards for “Bound For Glory,” “Let Me Get By” and more. The first night’s encore contained one more guest appearance as all three members of The Wood Brothers added to a cover of “Let Me Roll It” by Paul McCartney.
Sunday’s Tedeschi Trucks Band set was also a collaboration-heavy affair. Casady sat-in on Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out Of My Life, Woman” and stuck around for a “The Sky Is Crying” that also featured Guip and Kaukonen. Next up was a TTB/The Wood Brothers summit on The Rolling Stones’ “Sweet Virginia.” John Bell then came out to lead the Tedeschi Trucks Band on Bob Dylan’s “Down Along The Cove,” the soul classic “The Dark End Of The Street” and Leon Russell’s “Delta Lady.” The latter also featured TTB vocalist Alecia Chakour’s father Mitch Chakour.
