Audio & Videos: Joe Russo & Co. Present ‘Hooteroll? + Plus!’ At Capitol Theatre
By Scott Bernstein Apr 8, 2017 • 3:34 pm PDT

Drummer Joe Russo recruited Stuart Bogie (reeds/flute), Erik Deutsch (keyboards), Jonathan Goldberger (guitar), Dave Harrington (bass), Kevin Kendrick (vibraphone/percussion) and Jordan McLean (trumpet) for a concert held at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Friday night dubbed Hooteroll? + Plus!. The band played each track from Jerry Garcia and Howard Wales’ 1971 jazz-rock fusion album Hooteroll? and other tunes on Friday including an original penned by Russo.
Russo and his band ran through the material from Hooteroll? out of sequence over the course of two sets on Friday. After opening with “Morning In Marin,” the group performed “Vox Humana” by jazz composer Carla Bley. Two more Hooteroll? tracks, “Uncle Martin’s” and “Da Birg Song,” led into Gary Burton’s “Unfinished Symphony” ahead of a “DC – 502” first set closer.
Last night’s second set began with the debut of a Joe Russo original entitled “Song For Buddy.” The band filled the closing stanza with interpretations of Hooteroll? compositions “Up From The Desert,” “One A.M. Approach” and “A Trip To What Next” as well as takes on Keith Jarrett’s “Spiral Dance” and “What I Say” by Miles Davis. Russo et. al finished the evening with “South Side Strut,” the song that begins the original vinyl version of Hooteroll?
