Audio, Video & Setlist | Phil Lesh Quintet Returns To New York City

By Scott Bernstein Sep 22, 2014 7:30 am PDT

Last night Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh reassembled his long-running Phil Lesh Quintet ensemble of keyboardist Rob Barraco, guitarists Warren Haynes and Jimmy Herring and drummer John Molo to perform their first show in New York City in over a decade. The performance took place at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium in Queens and featured a mix of Grateful Dead classics, fun covers and even a few originals from the band’s lone studio LP.

The PLQ kicked off the show with “Playing In The Band” and fit covers of Traffic’s “Low Spark” and an instrumental take on The Beatles’ “A Day In The Life” along with early Dead tunes “Mason’s Children,” “Doin’ That Rag” and “Viola Lee Blues” in the first set as well as the original “Night Of 1000 Stars.” Set Two started with a jam and included two improv-heavy, seamless segments such as the “St. Stephen” > “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “The Other One” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower” sequence that finished off the closing stanza. Lesh brought his band back to the stage for an encore of the PLQ original “The Real Thing.”

Here’s the setlist from last night’s show:

Set One: Playing in the Band > The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, Mason’s Children, Doin’ That Rag, A Day in the Life (instrumental), Viola Lee Blues, Night of 1000 Stars
