Arcade Fire Covers John Lennon At Lollapalooza Warm-Up Show In Chicago

By Jeffrey Greenblatt Aug 6, 2017 11:43 am PDT

Last night it was the Arcade Fire‘s turn to play an intimate show at the Metro in Chicago, a night after the Foo Fighters commandeered the 1,100-person capacity club. The Montreal-based band, who will close out the 2017 edition of Lollapalooza tonight with a headlining set, used last night’s show at the Wrigleyville club as a warm up playing a mix of new material, tour debuts, old-favorites and John Lennon cover.

Arcade Fire opened the night with, “Everything Now,” the title track to their recently studio album. Over the course of their 17-song main set the six-piece act worked their way through material from their five studio albums, as well as offering up the live debut of “Dimensions,” a track they contributed to the soundtrack for the movie Her.

After playing the anthemic track “Wake Up,” for the encore, the band returned to the stage for a second song launching into a take on John Lennon’s “Mind Games.” According to Pitchfork, Arcade Fire worked in elements of Radiohead’s “Karma Police,” and David Bowie’s “Oh! You Pretty Things,” into the the title track from Lennon’s 1973 release.

Here are more details from Pitchfork:

Towards the end of the rendition, the band began playing the outro of Radiohead’s “Karma Police,” singing: “Phew, for a minute there/I lost myself.” After incorporating the chorus of David Bowie’s 1971 track “Oh! You Pretty Things,” they looped back to the Lennon song. Arcade Fire ended by reprising the chorus of their own song “Wake Up.
